I began working with computers in 1975, when they filled entire rooms and belonged to major corporations. Over the years they have become household appliances, yet many people still shy away.
In 1993 I signed up for my first online account with Prodigy. At the time there were only three major online companies, Prodigy, AOL, and CompuServe. Each allowed their customers to access data on their servers and to e-mail other people within their networks. Soon, we were allowed access to the "web", meaning we could see other servers and e-mail people outside of our network. The internet was born.
Today we can hardly imagine our world without the internet. How did we manage without it? The web has become our Yellow Pages, our Encyclopedia Britannica, our Webster's Dictionary, our Rand McNally Road Atlas, and our New York Times, all rolled into one.
When Prodigy allowed it's members to create their own "personal pages", I was eager to sign up. Eventually I created my own website to share photos and stories with relatives. Then my husband wanted one for his business, another friend for his business, and before I knew it, I was designing websites. And, it was fun!
For the past four years I have designed and maintained a very busy website for a local non-profit event. In the beginning, I designed contests just to get the event's 1400+ participants to use the website. It quickly became a huge success and in it's four year had over 40,000 hits.
One of the features of this website is the list of sponsors. Every year I search for our sponsors' web sites so I can link to them and copy a descriptive paragraph. It always surprises me when I cannot find a business on the web. That got me thinking, "Why would a business not have a web site today?" It doesn't make good business sense.
When a friend opened her own business and asked me if I would design a web site, I decided it was time to put my skills to work helping people get on the web. Simple Site Studio was born.
My goal? To make your site simple, your cost economical, and your experience pleasant.
